From Plant Floor to Farmer’s Field and Beyond

ANN ARBOR, MI - Working side-by-side with the leaders of local organizations and key alumni mentors, Tauber students were once again able to solve real problems for the good of the community. The Third Annual Industry Advisory Board Community Service Day delivered great results as a cross-section of operations professionals joined together to take on projects that were selected based on feedback from last year’s event, and which focused on using operations strategies to make positive changes for deserving organizations.

“The service day is an opportunity to network with leaders across industries in our IAB and to serve the community by completing a single-day operations project,” said Theresa Ceccarelli of the Tauber Institute. “This event really tops off the hard work the students have been doing to enrich the Tauber experience. Many of our IAB representatives participated in this event including, Paul Nuyen, VP Boeing;  Beth Krenzer, VP Cardinal Health; Roger Kallock, President Chagrin Consulting;  and Mark Hayward, Vice Chair Mayo Clinic."

  • At Springfield Industries, a Rochester Hills-based custom polymer manufacturer, the Tauber volunteers completed a value stream map of a specific operation and identified several improvement actions for Springfield’s leadership to consider as part of the 2014 Community Service Day. Students also conducted a 5S analysis for improvements to be implemented on the plant floor. View photos here.
  • The Washtenaw Food Hub (WFH) is a clearinghouse of information and logistic solutions aimed at optimizing the distribution of sustainable locally-raised crops to clients. The WFH mission is to “provide facilities and market channels to increase the economic viability of diversified farms, develop small businesses, and provide community benefits that will strengthen the food system and local economy.”  For Community Service Day, the Tauber faction split into two teams: one focused on developing a marketing strategy while the other team devised a plan for using existing floor space to generate additional revenue.
