Bill Chiu is the vice president of Distribution Engineering and Technology for DTE Electric. In his role, Chiu is focused on the company’s multi-year effort to improve electric system reliability and to modernize the energy grid to prepare for a future with a greater level of distributed energy resources. This includes overseeing the company’s Distribution Operations engineering, grid modernization and construction activities, and driving improvements in asset management and work management practices. Prior to joining DTE Energy, Chiu served as the vice president of operations for Puerto Rico-based Luma Energy where he was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the bulk power grid for the islands of Puerto Rico as well as the system’s capital improvements. Chiu also held several leadership roles at Southern California Edison, including managing director of Engineering, Major Projects and Work Management and managing director of the Grid Modernization and Resiliency Program Management Office. With more than three decades of experience in the electric energy industry, Chiu is also an active contributor to the industry through his many leadership roles in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES), including chairing the task force that developed an IEEE PES resiliency whitepaper for the electric grid in 2020 and serving as an executive officer for the IEEE PES Transformers Committee from 2004 to 2015. In his role as chair of the Transformers Committee, Chiu led one of the largest PES standards committees that sponsored more than 90 industry standards used worldwide in the power industry. Chiu earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California. Chiu also holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from California Polytechnic State University.
