
Tom Buchmueller is a health economist who studies public policy related to health insurance and health care reform. Professor Buchmueller also holds an appointment in Department of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution. Previously, he was an elected member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Health Economists and the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Health Economics. From 2011 to 2012, he served as the Senior Health Economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers and from 2023 to 2025 he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
