Scheduled during spring break 2020 (March 1-6), students will go to the "Gemba" to examine the production facilities of some of the most important global companies in Japan and explore two beautiful Japanese cities (Tokyo and Nagoya).

Program at a glance:

Tours: 6 company visits and 1 start-up
Plant tours included a behind-the-scenes look at each facility's continuous improvement initiatives, use of technology, and workforce best practices. Gained improvement ideas for students to use in their toolbox.
Cultural activities: visiting Tsukiji fish market, Japanese sushi-making class, and more
Length of program: 1 week
Number of participants: 20 students, 2 faculty members

Program overview:

Tokyo

  • 3M - an American multinational conglomerate corporation operating in the fields of industry, worker safety, health care, and consumer goods. 
  • Visit the Tsukiji fish market and try different Japanese foods for lunch; experience modern life in Japan in the Shibuya district; feel like a local in the old town of Yanaka; discover Sensoji – the oldest temple in Tokyo
  • ​​BorgWarner - American worldwide automotive industry components and parts supplier
  • Challenergy - a Tokyo start-up that produces next-generation wind turbines which can generate electricity from typhoons
  • Arconic - an American company specializing in lightweight metals engineering and manufacturing
  • Japanese sushi-making class during which you will learn how to make various types of your own sushi. You will learn not just about the recipes and the methods of sushi-making but also the history and the stories related to Japanese cooking from our lovely chef
  • Yamaha - a Japanese multinational corporation and the world's largest piano manufacturing company

Nagoya

  • Boeing - an American multinational that designs, manufactures and sells airplanes, satellites, telecommunications equipment, and missiles worldwide (may not be possible for international students)
  • ​Toyota - a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer known for its lean manufacturing and just-in-time production
