Taught jointly by faculty of the Ross School of Business and the Stamps School of Art & Design, the annual Integrated Product Design course challenges cross-disciplinary student teams from the College of Engineering, Ross School of Business, Stamps School of Art & Design, and School of Information to design, build, and market a brand new product, and then to face free market competition through the IPD Trade Show. This course marks the 23rd Trade Show.

The Fall 2018 IPD challenge:  One-handed Convenience Product

  • Visualize the situation of routine bi-lateral task (requiring two hands) as inconvenient, irritating, difficult or impossible.
  • Consider the offered products, and how each would enable performance of a routine daily life task by a person with only one hand available to use it. The contexts of use include home, leisure, school or work settings and associated activities.
  • Decide how you would spend up to $200 of IPD money on these products.

In addition, the student-designed products must be profitable at a consumer cost of less than $200.

Members of the University of Michigan community and the general public are invited to meet the student design teams, test out prototypes of their new products, and vote for the “best of the best” at the Fall 2018 Integrated Product Development Trade Show, December 5 in the Colloquium of the Ross School of Business.

Want a preview?  Student teams will design webpages and videos to advertise their new products and release them to the public for on-line voting on November 20. Check out their websites here after Nov 20.
